Quick Tips When Caring For Your Pregnant Dog

It is the most exciting thing when your dog is pregnant. But your dog needs a lot of attention during this time. A lot of the things that they could do on their own before might require some help and you need to be on your toes about their health and diet. Plus, it’s important to keep your dog comfortable and cool during the time, so that they don’t hurt themselves or get agitated and fall sick. And for all of that, there are some tips you need to keep in mind. Some easy things to remember and work through to make sure that your dog is comfortable the whole time!

  • Keep checking for parasites! They are the worst things that could happen to your dog, but mostly during the pregnancy. Check for ticks and fleas and get rid of them as soon as possible. And if that’s not enough, it’s also important to deworm your dog to remove all parasites. This should be done quite regularly, but it’s definitely something to keep in mind during the pregnancy.
  • Obviously the most important thing is a healthy diet. Make sure that your dog is eating the right kind of food and while their regular diet might be alright, during the pregnancy, it’s important that they have food that is much more balanced and nutritious, because they need as much as they can get during the term.
  • Being pregnant does not mean that the exercise must stop. Keep walking your dog every day, but you can take it a little easier, let your dog set the pace that is comfortable for them. It could even be as simple as walking around the backyard, but it’s important to keep the exercise going and keeping your dog healthy.
  • Their usual sleeping place isn’t going to be ideal once the puppies are born, so make sure you set up a different area in the house that is perfect. Keep in mind that it needs to be able to contain the puppies and stop them from climbing out. Use towels and sheets and anything that is soft and comfortable for padding. Also, keep it clean. Which means that you need to change the towels and sheets regularly, keeping it hygienic for your dog and her puppies.
  • And of course, the most important thing is vaccination. Like with humans, dogs require vaccination that will also protect her puppies. As soon as you discover that your dog is pregnant, take her for a checkup and make sure she gets all her vaccination shot. Ideally, you should make sure she gets the shots before she is pregnant, because it helps immunize herself and her puppies.
